Blood pressure goes up during and immediately after exercise, as your heart works hard to get blood pumped to muscles. How high blood pressure increases and how long it stays there is individual, but on average, it should return to normal in just a few minutes.

If you want to measure your blood pressure changes after exercise, you can purchase a blood pressure cuff to use at home. Shah recommends waiting until your heart rate returns to normal. Your normal heart rate, or pulse, is the number of times the heart beats per minute at rest. How do you know if you have low blood pressure? Low blood pressure can sometimes signal something serious, like internal blood loss, and the dizziness that often accompanies it can lead to falls and other accidents. Blood pressure levels usually rise during exercise. Accordingly, they should be regularly checked for accuracy 6—12 months. Low to moderate intensity exercise BP can be recorded with greater accuracy than at maximal intensity due to less artefact. However, more frequent measurement may be needed with higher risk subjects. The BP operator should keep good verbal contact with the exercising subject to gauge an estimation of time to stopping exercise due to fatigue, and take measures of BP accordingly.

Objective measures of effort such as the Borg scale administered in the final seconds of each exercise level is useful to guide the amount of time left within a stage to measure BP. Subjects can steady themselves by lightly holding the front or side rails of the treadmill, but should not grip tightly as this can reduce workload by supporting body weight.
