Can you bring food into smithsonian

When you visit any of the Smithsonian's buildings you will discover that we have security measures to ensure your safety and the safety of the objects contained within.

At many of our museums, you'll be greeted upon entry by one of our security personnel who will conduct a thorough hand-check of all bags, briefcases, purses, and containers. Those who are unable to go through the metal detector will be hand-screened with an electronic wand by security personnel. Bag checks will be conducted by hand or via an X-ray machine. Visitors should not leave personal belongings unattended.

Many items are prohibited at all Smithsonian museums. Do not bring sharp items into the museums such as knives including pocket or "Swiss Army" style knives , screwdrivers, scissors, etc. Other items not permitted include firearms, pepper spray, and Mace. The Smithsonian permits still and video photography for noncommercial use only in its museums and exhibitions, unless otherwise posted. For the safety of our visitors and collections, the Smithsonian prohibits the use of tripods, monopods, selfie sticks or similar devices in our museums and gardens.

This is a preventive measure to protect visitors and objects, especially during crowded conditions. We encourage museum visitors to take selfies and share their experiences—and leave the selfie sticks in their bags. Working members of the media who need to use a tripod or monopod must obtain permission from the museum's Public Affairs Office and must be escorted by a museum staff member while in the building or garden.

Service animals are welcome in the museums and the National Zoo. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA , a service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. Pets are not permitted. Handheld photography and video for personal use is generally permitted throughout the museum. Sometimes, photography of particular artworks may not be allowed in selected special exhibitions; please check the wall signage to confirm.

No tripods, selfie sticks, or similar long tools are permitted in the galleries to protect the artworks.

Bags, boxes, and packages may be inspected for security reasons upon entrance or exit , and officers may limit the size of what you may carry into the galleries. Sketching is permitted only in permanent collection galleries and the Luce Foundation Center , not in special exhibitions.

Please be extremely careful with your drawing tools; show respect for the artwork and your fellow visitors. Pens, loose ink, fountain pens, oil crayon, paint including watercolors , easels or stands, and charcoal or pastel in stick form are not allowed.

Guidelines and Policies Please help us protect our artworks by respecting the following guidelines: No smoking, eating, or drinking is allowed in museum galleries at either location; smoking is not permitted in the Kogod Courtyard.

Visitors to SAAM's main building are permitted to bring in food and beverages to be consumed in designated spaces in the Kogod Courtyard only; alcoholic beverages and food for groups is not permitted. Outside food is not permitted at the Renwick Gallery, except for bottled water that may be consumed in designated areas. Please do not touch the artworks on display ; the salts and oils naturally produced on your hands are damaging to artworks, even sculpture and furniture.

Suitcases, large umbrellas, and large backpacks are not allowed in the galleries. Security officers may ask visitors to hand-carry smaller backpacks, or wear them on the front of their bodies. Please note that we do not offer coat or bag storage. For the safety of our visitors and collections, the use of tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks is not permitted at any time. Wheelchairs: Available on a first-come, first-served basis. See also, information for visitors with disabilities.

Food and Drink: Visitors are permitted to bring in food and beverages in resealable containers inside a backpack or other bag or store items in one of our public lockers. Food and beverages may not be consumed anywhere in the Museum except for the two designated cafeterias.
