Although it still gives them nutrition, animal blood is less appealing to vampires. Vampires who wish to blend in with human society are also seen to ingest human food and drinks, but, since their bodies can no longer digest this, they must cough everything up later. On occasion, the appeal of human blood can be so enticing that a "vegetarian" vampire will lose control, especially if their self-control is weak.
To a "vegetarian" vampire, carnivores' blood is more appetizing than herbivores, though still not quite as good as humans. On the moral grounds that all human life is precious, a very small proportion of vampires in the Twilight universe receive their sustenance from animal blood, jokingly calling themselves vegetarians. The only examples known are the Cullen family and the Denali coven. The blood of each human has an individual taste and smell; sometimes a certain vampire finds a particular human whose blood he or she finds nearly absolutely irresistible.
The Volturi call such a human " la tua cantante "—your singer—as their blood "sings" to that particular vampire. To most vampires, such discovery is an experience to be savored. A vampire's Edward Cullen skin sparkles when exposed to sunlight. After the change, vampires' physical appearance and muscle mass is enhanced and perfected, eye color changes, and they no longer need to breathe, though they often still do so out of habit, and feel uncomfortable without their sense of smell—the first warning of an impending threat or the smell of potential prey.
The ability to cut off airflow from their lungs allows them to remain submerged underwater for as long as they wish, and contributes greatly to their excellent swimming capabilities. Vampires are extraordinarily beautiful, some more attractive than others, such as Heidi and Rosalie. Their beauty is described as angelic or even god-like.
This is one of the several features meant to attract their prey—more specifically, to attract, fascinate, and if necessary seduce, unsuspecting humans. How physically appealing their prey finds them is determined by how desirable they were as humans themselves. If an already attractive human were to be transformed, their physical beauty would be "beyond breathtaking".
If they were of average interest, their attractiveness would be lower, but still stunningly beautiful. If however they were not particularly pleasing to the eye, they would become average as shown with James , but this is a rare occurrence, as vampires normally select exceptional humans to turn.
A vampire's skin is described as "chalky", alabaster, or marble because of its texture and feel, as well as its appearance. Regardless of original ethnicity, a vampire's skin will be exceptionally pale. The hue varies slightly, with darker-skinned humans having a barely discernible olive tone to their vampire skin, but the light shade remains the same.
They owe their unnatural pale complexion to their lack of blood flow; once they reach the first anniversary of their transformation, they no longer possess blood of their own though they still become slightly flushed after feeding.
When the venom spreads, it also leeches pigment in the skin, so after the transformation is complete, the vampire loses nearly all its skin color, as well as any moles, freckles, scars, tattoos, or any other part of the skin with pigment from their human life.
Their strong resemblance to marble statues rests also on their skin's granite-like appearance and impenetrability, as well as the now useless need to blink—the venom-based fluid that resides in the eyes now fulfills the function of eyelids and also lubricates the eye so that it can move easily within its sockets.
The vampire also is unable to produce tears after the transformation, as tears are used to remove objects harmful to the eye, and those objects would be unable to harm a vampires eye. A vampire may not move at all, if need be, and if they stay immobile for several thousand years, they will start showing the appearance of fragility or petrification, though their physical capabilities will remain unchanged.
Aside from Aro 's clouded, "milky" eyes, Bella notes that his skin—as well as that of his brothers, Marcus and Caius —looks like paper. However, though they feel closer to shale than granite, they are no more fragile than those remaining active. Their body's natural changes no longer occur. They cannot age or grow things such as fingernails, toenails, and hair will no longer be able to grow.
However, if an arm, leg, nose, or other such appendage should be removed, albeit painfully, it can be easily reattached.
Vampire venom is noted to be the only thing that scars a vampire. Since the venom is adhesive, coating the severed end with it will help it heal faster.
They show no physical or mental illnesses and defects, and their voice becomes more alluring, melodic, and seductive. Their heart no longer beats. The venom, and venom based liquids replace all of the natural chemical processes and functions in the body. It wets and pools in the mouth instead of saliva. It coats the eyes, burning through contacts after only a few hours, protecting them from damage and thus eliminating all necessity and reason to produce tears.
It also lubricates them, allowing them to move around more easily within their sockets. A similar venom based liquid lubricates between the vampires cells allowing their hard stone bodies to move. If a vampire were to remain motionless over thousands of years, dust will actually begin to petrify in response to the venom based liquids, turning their skin powdery and similar to shale in texture, as well as their eyes which develop a milky film over their red irises making the eyes appear pink in color.
This can be seen with the ancient Volturi members. These imperfections, however, do not affect the vampires impenetrability or compromise their vision, a vampire that stays motionless would be just as indestructible and sharp as a vampire remaining active. As vampires describe themselves, they are unchanging, "living stone" beings frozen exactly as they were when they were transformed. Though to another vampire, the granite-skin feels smooth, soft, and warm and not the icy-hard touch a human would feel.
Requiring little or no change to produce sperm, males can still breed, while female vampires cannot; their bodies no longer accommodate the changes related to pregnancy. In male vampires, the venom takes on a form so similar to seminal fluid that it can bond with a human ovum, making possible the creation of a human-vampire hybrid. The underlying biochemistry and physiology is currently unknown. Their bodily scent is based on their venom, which is pleasant, not only to humans, but to other vampires as well.
A wise vampire will avoid exposure to direct sunlight in public, so as not to be seen by humans during the day, unless the sky is overcast, since their skin sparkles like diamonds; their cells have become hard and refractive as if they were so many small prisms.
A comparison of the eyes of two vampires: the red Aro are of a vampire who feeds on humans, and the golden Jasper of one who feeds on animals. Newborn vampires show bright red eyes regardless of how long they abstain from blood, or their diet. A diet of human blood would eventually darken them to a rose red color. However, a diet of animal blood would instead dilute the eyes to a golden color. A vampire who has recently fed on animal blood will have light, honey gold eyes, while a vampire who has recently fed on human blood will have vivid crimson eyes.
All older vampires' eyes darken perceptively as they abstain from blood, until their eyes become onyx , or coal black. The process usually takes one to two weeks before the eyes are turned completely black. Only the Cullen and Denali covens are known to be vegetarian vampires, feeding only on animal blood instead of human.
Their eyes are liquid topaz, or honey-gold, reflecting their diet. These eyes, however, are viewed as strange and somewhat unnatural by other vampires whose diet consist of human blood, such as James and Victoria , and whose eyes are of a vivid deep crimson, becoming even more vivid as they continue to feed on human blood, and a darker burgundy as they abstain. Newborn vampires are known for having incredible strength as well as brilliant crimson eyes.
Both traits are caused by their own blood that still lingers within their tissues, producing the shockingly bright red eyes that "fade slowly over the course of a year" and incredible speed. In contrast, as vampires feed, their eyes become lighter. In addition to the thirst, the purplish-black bruises under their eyes become more pronounced as their thirst grows.
Though if they have recently fed the bruises becomes less noticeable, and all but disappear depending on how well-fed they are. The bruises indicate that vampires never sleep. The bite of a vampire can sever the limbs of their opponents, as vampires are known for having extremely sharp and strong teeth.
A vampire's teeth appear no different than regular human teeth. They do not possess fangs. However, a vampire's teeth are flawless, unbreakable, and razor sharp at the edges. They are also incredibly strong, able to bite through almost any solid substance, including vampire skin. Their teeth are also venomous, affected by the vampire venom that flows in their mouths.
According to Alice Cullen , a vampire's greatest weapon is their teeth, though they are more armed than necessary. Vampires carry 25 pairs of chromosomes, 2 chromosomes more than humans. Carlisle reveals this in Breaking Dawn while telling Jacob about their supernatural genetic relations. While vampires have 25 pairs of chromosomes, the Quileute shape-shifters carry Vampire hybrids are theorized to have 24 pairs themselves. A vampire's physical and mental abilities far exceed those of a human being.
These traits vary between different vampires depending on what they were more capable of as humans. Certain vampires also develop one extra supernatural power manifested from their strongest trait as a human. Vampire Victoria running so fast she becomes blurry. One of the most amazing among their abilities is their speed. They are able to run in excess of a hundred miles per hour, substantially faster than the human eye can see.
When vampires run, they become "all but invisible". The Quileute wolves are noted to be one of the few things that can keep up with them. This suggests that vampires are meant to move to a new location every so often. We see the speed of all the Cullens again during the baseball game.
Emmett is described as "a blur around the bases", and Edward can move so quickly that he is able to intercept a ball that has been hit "like a meteor. They can lay down and sit up within the same fraction of a second, almost without having to even think about going through the motions.
After being turned into a vampire, Bella describes her movements as being instantaneous. Edward exerting his strength to save Bella. Another enhanced trait is their unstoppable physical strength. A vampire is said to be thousands of times stronger than any human, able to lift objects several hundreds of times their own weight. They can crush granite boulders, subdue any prey, throw cars, crush metal, and uproot trees with their bare hands.
Edward feared his strength when first meeting Bella, and explained that there was barely a difference between caressing her head and knocking it off. A good example of their strength is seen when Bella decides to arm wrestle Emmett after becoming a vampire. She describes the power in his one arm to be about the same as a cement truck moving down a sharp decline at over 60 miles per hour. She beats him, however, because she is a newborn at the time. Newborn vampires are always stronger than older ones, since their strength derives from the lingering human blood left in their body from their human life.
A vampire's strength also enables them to leap incredible distances. During the birthday party she throws for Bella in "New Moon," Alice uses Bella's camera to take a picture of Edward and Bella, suggesting that vampires can appear in pictures in the "Twilight" universe.
This is confirmed when Bella prints out the pictures and Edward is clearly visible — this contradicts many vampire myths that claim the creatures can't be caught on film. In "New Moon," while the family is preventing Jasper from attacking Bella, the Cullens' piano is destroyed. However, the piano is back in the same spot in perfect shape by the last movie. As Carlisle tends to the cut on Bella's arm after Jasper's outburst, he drops the used gauze into a bowl.
When he is finished treating her, he sets the bloody gauze on fire, likely to remove the scent of blood for the other vampires in the house. The camera lingers on this bowl, and the blood and gauze seem to resemble the red-and-white tulip on the cover of the "New Moon" book. Bella has a conversation about the fate of vampires when Carlisle is tending to her injured arm in "New Moon," and in the same film, Edward explains that the main reason he doesn't want to turn Bella into a vampire is because he doesn't want to damn her.
In "Twilight," after driving Bella to school, Edward alludes to his own damnation when he says, "I'm breaking all the rules now anyway, since I'm going to hell. Charlie gives Bella a camera for her birthday, which Bella brings to school with her, presumably to take pictures of her friends.
This is the same camera that Alice later uses to photograph Bella and Edward at her birthday party. After the party, when Bella prints out the picture Alice took of her and Edward, her computer screen shows pictures of other characters too, like Eric and Jessica.
When Bella attempts to email Alice after the Cullens move away in "New Moon," she addresses the emails to acullen me. These email addresses, ending in me. During one of the bike-fixing scenes, there is a faint wolf paw print on the bottom part of Jacob's shirt — most likely a sly bit of foreshadowing since Jacob turns into a werewolf a little later in the film.
Most cafeteria scenes in movies show characters drinking out of disposable containers and eating with plastic utensils, which is also what many real high-school lunch experiences are like. In "New Moon," however, Bella's friends are drinking out of glasses and appear to be using real bowls, plates, and utensils.
In addition to being a little unrealistic for a small-town public high school, the students in the lunch scenes from the first movie don't use this fine-dining ware. According to director Chris Weitz, both of these titles were made up for the film , and the design team even created fake posters for the background of the scenes. The brand is actually Rainier beer , a Seattle-based brewing company, which makes sense since the film takes place in Washington.
During a flashback sequence in "New Moon" that shows Edward and Bella in the same meadow from "Twilight," her left foot is missing. Her right foot is clearly visible, and her left leg is fully there, but the space where her foot should be is empty save for the grass in the field. When Bella first goes to La Push, Washington , with her friends in "Twilight," she and Jacob are both bundled up in jackets as they walk along the beach.
However, after Jacob becomes a werewolf in "New Moon," he walks on the same beach in just a T-shirt — even though Bella is still wearing a jacket. Jacob later explains that werewolves have a higher body temperature and don't get cold as easily as humans.
In "Twilight," Victoria has blonde hair, but in"New Moon," her hair is instead a very vivid red-ish orange. Her hair color changes again in the third movie to a more muted auburn, however, that may be due to the fact that a completely different actress portrayed the role in "Eclipse. New actress aside, the red hair color more closely aligns with how Victoria was described in the books.
James, the tracker vampire that hunts her in the first movie, bites Bella on her right arm during the big fight scene. Edward stops the venom from turning her into a vampire, but the bite still scars Bella. When Alice and Bella realize that Edward is going to attempt to force the Volturi to kill him, they both take a plane to Italy to try to stop him.
We don't actually see the pair on the plane, but we do see their conversation in the car on the way to the airport followed by a shot of a plane taking off. By the next scene, they're in Italy. The plane is clearly traveling during the daytime, so Alice's vampire skin would have been sparkling noticeably, but neither Bella nor Alice discuss this at all.
A "St. Marcus Day" festival is well underway when Bella and Alice arrive in Italy , and Alice explains that the festival is the celebration of the "expulsion of vampires from the city.
Although that's a made-up holiday, some Italians do celebrate the Feast of St. Mark , known as La Festa di San Marco, which commemorates the death of the Catholic saint — and doesn't have anything to do with vampires. Edward plans on removing his shirt at noon during the Italian festival, knowing that the Volturi will kill him for publicly revealing himself as a vampire in front of so many human witnesses.
Bella reaches Edward before he can fully step out into the sunlight, but by the time she stops him, he is already shirtless and sparkling where he's standing. A child sees this and tugs on someone's robe to show them, but we never see if the adult notices Edward. Even if no one but the child saw Edward sparkle, and the child never told anyone, it still seems odd that the movie made a point of showing us that Edward's stunt was noticed without this actually having any consequences.
While discussing marriage with Edward at the beginning of "Eclipse," Bella is at first opposed to the idea. She tells Edward that people will assume that they're getting married so young because she's pregnant. Jessica asks Angela if she thinks Bella will be "showing" and when Angela says that Bella isn't pregnant, Jessica asks, "Who else gets married at 18?
There is a wolf painting next to the door inside Bella's bedroom that's noticeable several times throughout the first three movies. The painting is probably a subtle foreshadowing of the existence of werewolves in the "Twilight" universe and Bella's connection to Jacob, but it could also just be standard Pacific Northwest home decor.
Bella gets a paper cut while opening a gift from Esme and Carlisle in the "New Moon" movie. Since the blood from her cut causes Jasper to try and attack her, viewers never get to see what the gift is. In "Eclipse," Edward reminds Bella about the plane tickets his "parents" got for her birthday, which she and Edward use to visit her mother, so that's apparently what was in the gift from the previous film.
When Bella visits her mom in "Eclipse," she tells her that she is considering going to the University of Alaska for college. But her actual plan for life after high school is marrying Edward and becoming a vampire. Bella and Edward do get married, but they struggle to explain her absence while she is pregnant and a newly turned vampire.
If Bella had told her parents that she was indeed going to college somewhere, her absence could have been explained with something a bit more realistic than the "medical center in Switzerland" excuse that she ends up using. Riley, a teenager from Forks, goes missing at the beginning of "Eclipse," and we later find out that he was actually turned into a vampire and forced to join Victoria's army.
When Charlie is going over his case notes in the kitchen, viewers can also clearly see the missing-person poster that was hung around town. According to Charlie's notes, Riley was last seen wearing a gray shirt, something green, a brown trench coat, and brown boots. However, the missing-person poster states that Riley was wearing blue jeans, a light-colored T-shirt, and black shoes. For graduation, Jacob gives Bella a bracelet with a wolf charm that he made.

Although they do not make any appearances in Twilight , Aro , Marcus and Caius are mentioned by Edward as the inspiration of the gods in several Italian paintings that belong to Carlisle , the artwork created by Francesco Solimena. Jane opening the door for Edward , Bella and Alice.
The Volturi first appear in New Moon. Near the beginning of New Moon , Edward tells Bella about the Volturi's history, place and occupation in the world of vampires, and that irritating the Volturi was the perfect way to get yourself slaughtered. When Edward thought Bella had killed herself, he goes to Volterra to ask the Volturi to kill him; they refuse. Aro in particular, wants Edward to join them, and Edward decides to force their hand by exposing himself to the humans of the city during the St.
Marcus Day Festival when the sunlight reflects on his diamond-like skin, which will ultimately lead to his destruction as punishment for the exposure. Bella surrounded by the Volturi. Bella and Alice , however, are able to arrive in the city and find him before he could reveal himself.
Aro is intrigued when he sees Bella's immunity to Jane's, Edward's and his powers. After Edward, Alice, and Bella refused to join the Volturi, Caius tells them that Bella must die because she knows their secrets, which Edward refuses to allow happen in the movie , a fight ensues between Edward and Felix until Felix overpowers him, and Aro orders him to stop before he rips Edward's head off, at Bella's plea.
But Alice is able to convince them to let them Bella go when she "shows" Aro a vision of Bella becoming a vampire in the future.
They are then allowed to leave the city after midnight. The Volturi appear at the end of Eclipse , though they are mentioned many times. At first, the Cullens suspect that the Volturi may be creating an army in Seattle. However, they know that even if it isn't them, they will soon have to come to sort it out. This causes worry that they will stop in to see if Bella is still human. But by the time they arrive, they find that the Cullens with the aid of a werewolf pack have already eradicated the army.
The guard merely interrogate and kill Bree Tanner , the only newborn who had surrendered. They also promise to come back and check Bella 's mortality soon before leaving. Right before Felix destroyed Bree, she telepathically gives all information she could provide to Edward Cullen , including the guard's secret visit to Victoria and Riley.
Felix , Jane , Alec and Demetri watching the newborns. In The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner , after hearing about the army of newborns terrorizing Seattle , the Volturi send a portion of their guard to "deal" with the army: Jane , Demetri , Felix and two other vampires.
Alec replaces the other two in the Eclipse movie. The guards find and visit Victoria and Riley in a cottage. As it turns out, they have been aware of the army's actions for a while and suspect that its creation was to be used for the destruction of the Olympic coven. Jane makes an offer to Victoria: a five-day limit to serve their purpose or they will end them. When Victoria asks what would happen after they have served their purpose, Jane simply replies, "That depends on how successful you are.
Caius is planning to send a hunting party to Forks to see if Bella has become a vampire or not. The announcement delays the Volturi's plans because they aren't sure if it means that they had actually gotten married or if Bella had been turned.
In the end, Aro decides to send Bella a wedding gift—a thick, gold-chained necklace with a diamond the size of a golf ball accompanied by a note saying, " I so look forward to meeting the new Mrs. Cullen in person, " which worries Bella. Before she can, however, the vampire Irina mistakes her daughter to be an immortal child ; a vampire child that had forbidden to create, and informs the Volturi of this " crime ".
They gather the entire guard together with their wives, and set out to destroy the Cullens. It takes them one month to do so, as they take the time to gather witnesses. Though they take up the pretense of justification, Aro really has another reason for gathering the entire guard: he is determined to bring Alice, as well as Edward and Bella, into the Volturi, but wants to keep enemies from breaking into their headquarters.
When the Volturi finally arrive, they find that the Cullens have gathered what appears to be an army to oppose them, made up of 27 vampires, including their old rivals— the Romanians , and a large number of "werewolves". In reality, the Cullens' 'army' is a group of witnesses that could testify that Renesmee, the so-called immortal child, is really the hybrid daughter of Edward and Bella. Aro is convinced of this after seeing Edward's memories, and Irina admits her false accusation.
